I already have a blog where I keep all my creative work. My life is changing a lot at the moment and there are lots of issues, beliefs and such that I find myself musing for hours over. I've decided that it might be a good idea to write my musings down somewhere. I have no idea where this will go so it will be an adventure, an exciting one I hope.

Recovering from depression

Psalm 42:5-6 - "Why are you so downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet save him, my saviour and my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the Land of Jordan, the heights of Hormon - from Mount Mizar."

Depression is not a nice state to be in. As well as being a period full of hopelessness, it can also be a time for soul searching and asking questions. The depressive episode may have been triggered by overwhelming circumstances or by focusing too much on the unpleasant parts of your life.

God will help you through any circumstance that is causing you angst and will stay with you under the dark cloud lifts. He will be constantly with by your side until he rescues you from the last depressive moment. You need to place your trust in God that he will rescue you now, and will again in the future if the need arises. It is possible that he may do this through some sort of medical practitioner who he puts in your path who is trained to help those who are suffering from sadness, grief or depression.

Be persistent in your prayer. There are countless examples in the Bible as well as today of God lifting a burden from someone due that person trusting him and persistently praying. As you let our awesome God in, he will do his work of comfort, transformation and encouragement - often in ways that you may not understand. However, never underestimate God's willingness to give peace, hope and victory in your life.

Psalm 35:10 - "My whole being will exclaim, 'who is like you, Lord? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.'"

Psalm 145:3 - "Great is the Lord and the most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom."

Be persistent in your prayer. There are many examples in the Bible as well as today of God lifting a burden from someone who continued trusting in him through persistent prayer. When you pray to God you are welcoming him in to do his work of comfort, transformation and encouragement. God's willingness to give peace, hope and personal victory in your life should never be under estimated.

Praising the Lord when you are depressed can be very difficult. However, if you can manage to, then the Lord will work within you to shift your mood immediately. You don't have to put on a joyful act to praise God.

However, praise him for his unfailing, unconditional love for you. Praise God for the gift of salvation and eternal life. Praise the Lord for anything good which you see in the world. Praise him for his promise to help you through your depression. Your praises are deliberate acts of obedience that, whilst difficult at times, generally produce almost immediate results.

Nehemiah 8:10 - "Go and enjoy choice, food and sweet drinks, send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."

Psalm 126:5 - "Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy."

In times when you find yourself weak and in need, you are more open to receiving God's strength. When life is sweet and everything is going your way, it is easy to overlook God's hand in your life. However, as God works through your weakness, you will learn to depend more on him and recognise and be grateful for the good work that he can accomplish in you. And when you find yourself coming out of the other side of your depression, you will find that you are closer to God and stronger than ever. God desperately wants to begin to lift you out of the pit of depression and fear, but you need to let him do so.

Let God in so that he can lift you up!!!
